Thomas Cromwell was born in 1485, in Putney, southwest London. He was the son of a cloth worker, and spent much of his earliest adulthood in Italy as a soldier, accountant and merchant. In 1512, he returned to England and studied law. In 1520, Cromwell became legal secretary to cherry-red Wolsey, who was in service of Henry VIII.
